The World’s Top Restaurants

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

There has been much hype with the announcement of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Michelin Stars were in full flare as the judges once again chose Rene Redzepi’s Noma for its 3rd consecutive win. It really would be an interesting state of affairs if the hallowed, El Bulli, was still operational. El Bulli, as the current leader, with 4 straight wins for the Worlds number 1 restaurant has been missed in the competition. To us anyway.

Amongst the Top 100, our very own Margot Janse from The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Francais and Luke Dale Roberts from the Test Kitchen and The Pot Luck Club, were both placed in 57th and 74th places respectively. Congrats to you both.

Take a look at the full list here.

2011 World’s 50 Best Restaurants Announced.

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Rene Redzepi (above) and his Noma restaurant in Copenhagen have held onto first place honours at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, hosted in London last night. Redzepi has been hailed for the creative use of indigenous ingredients and thoughtful dishes at his Danish restaurant. Second place went to El Cellar De Can Roca and third to Mugaritz, two restaurants that have taken over for Spain where El Bulli has left off. The Fat Duck in England is down to fifth place while Brazilian restaurant D.O.M moved up 11 places to get seventh position.

A very hearty congratulations to our friend Margot Janse from Le Quartier Francais in Franschhoek. The restaurant was placed at #36 and makes the top 50 for the 7th consecutive year. It also won Best Restaurant in Africa and the Middle East. The Ledbury in London and chef Brett Graham, who worked under Liam at BANC restaurant in Sydney and who Liam visited in January, came in at #34.

Margot Janse Comes to Chefs Warehouse.

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Yup, that’s the scoop. Margot Janse is coming to do a class at Chefs Warehouse. The celebrated chef from Le Quartier Francais restaurant in Franschhoek, which under her guidance has regularly found a place on The Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants list (currently rated at #31), will give guests the chance to see her in action in the demonstration kitchen preparing some of her favourite dishes. Based on the 5-course tasting menu she serves at The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Francais, with dishes like ‘Lesotho royal highland trout, squid ink, avocado, wasabi’ and ‘Peking duck breast, confit leg tortellini, pea parfait, butternut,  juniper and sour fig,’ this is going to be an evening of cuisine par excellence.

Margot will be traveling on an inspiring food trip, so we’re yet to nail down an exact date of her evening here, but we’re hoping it’ll be before November this year. Watch this space for updates…
