We like to think together we have created a little bit of India in Cape Town.

We don't follow or serve any one region or style of Indian food but a selection of dishes that originate from all over India. Our menu at Thali isn't traditional Indian food, but it is our interpretation of it – obviously with total respect to the culture, cuisine, ingredients and techniques. We have designed a menu that is served over three courses, starting with the milder flavours and working through to the hotter curries to finish.

Liam partnered with Dimo Papachristodoulou from The Fat Cactus and Long Street Cafe fame to open Thali in 2016.

Head chef JP van der Haar

JP started at Thali as our sous chef in December 2016 and soon found himself in the head chef position under the guidance of Liam.

JP and Liam recently traveled to India for a week to eat and experience the country that started this journey of their much-loved Cape Town restaurant.

Filled with inspiration when they returned, JP revamped the menu and Thali is now open for lunches on Fridays and Saturdays.

‘I love when you walk through the door you get all the different smells coming from the kitchen, the smoke from the tandoori and charcoal ovens and a hint of incense, and it takes me straight back to Mumbai.’

Nate

Nathaniel ‘Nate’ has been with us at Bree street for a few years, moving up the ranks and between our restaurants. Nate spent some time at Singita recently and is now part of the team here at Thali.

Cedric Mbayi

I’m the kind of person who loves to surprise my guests. Here at Thali, we do things differently. Yes, it is Indian food, but with a twist, and even our guests from India are surprised. I love to recommend wines with the changing food offering, and sometimes our regulars don’t look at the menu, they trust that we know how to surprise and delight them.

Dine in our courtyard

Our outside dining experience is a little piece of India in a private, shaded urban garden. The sparkled courtyard feels magical and holds pieces collected on our travels.

The high walled courtyard dining room is perfect for eating outdoors in the warm Cape Town climate.

Our cocktail bar

Our beautiful bar dominates the first dining room at Thali. Cocktails are artfully created and change regularly with the seasons.

A well-curated selection of whiskeys, gins and South African wines are also on offer as well as our signature Indian spiced chai.
