THE old BAILEY

On top of Bree Street’s The Bailey is an old-school Big City drinks lounge with outdoor terrace, saluting not only whiskey, wingback chairs and Winchester couches… but wine, cocktails – done properly -- and all the nibbles that go with, whatever you’re drinking. Speakeasyish urban energy and chill, grown-up elegance without pretence and a host of great drinks and eats: that’s The Old Bailey.

Let’s start with the whiskey – spelled with an ‘e’ because Liam is Irish. We’ve got one of South Africa’s most extensive selections, with over 370 whiskeys from 14 countries, from Scotland to Japan.

We’ve assembled a premier whiskey collection, including old favourites, rare gems and even an impressive array of some 80 whiskeys, each with its own graphic label, from That Boutique-y Whisky Company, the indie bottler of distilleries from around the world.

This is a place to learn about whiskey, with hosted tastings, from introductory to advanced. If it’s your passion, join the Member’s Club with engraved personalised lockers to store your own special bottles and crystal glassware, and get all the perks that come with it.

But we’re also 100% here for you if whiskey makes you swipe left. Come for a perfectly made Cosmopolitan, Negroni Sbagliato or martini. Or a signature cocktail like the Tomlin Fashioned or a Roku Spritz. Or a chilled glass of Chardonnay. Whatever your taste, it’s there for sipping in the cool dark lounge or outside on the terrace overlooking Town.

While you’re drinking, you might take in some smooth live jazz or check out an ongoing art collaboration with new wave art gallery Scary Polony. There’s always something going on here. It’s a space that lends itself to functions and events, where pretty much anything can be concocted.

Or just come to sit quietly with your gin and tonic.

Ultimately, it’s for everyone who enjoys sipping a well-made drink, lounging and socialising. And food, of course, as it is a Liam Tomlin venture. With snacks, small plates and bigger plates, there’s no need to move on after drinks.
